Goldenseal |
What is Goldenseal?Hydrastis canadensis is also known as Goldenseal, Eye Root, Indian Dye, Yellowroot, Indian Turmeric or Orange Root. Goldenseal is a hardy perennial North American plant that often grows to about 2 feet in height and has a single erect stem that produces flowers. The medicinal value of the plant is in the root – a thick fibrous orange colored root that is harvested from the time the plant reaches maturity, at about 2-3 years. The Greek name of the plant is derived from two root words – ‘water’ and ‘to accomplish’. This is probably indicative of the plant’s ability to affect the mucous membranes of the body. Goldenseal is an excellent antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. It has been used topically on the skin to ward off minor infections, to treat burns and to treat minor scrapes and injuries. Its usefulness as an antiseptic and a clotting agent in case of injuries is well noted by the American Indians, who used the root to extract a brilliant yellow dye. Goldenseal is becoming very hard to find these days as its demand far outstrips the supply. The plant is hardy but requires shade. A good garden soil with plenty of artificial shade is optimal for the growth of this plant. Well drained, friable soil, enriched with compost or manure will supply all the nutrients that goldenseal requires. Benefits of GoldensealGoldenseal has been used to stem swelling and infection. It effectively combats infections in the lungs, mouth, intestine and urinary system. Today, it is immensely popular as an immune booster and natural antibiotic. It is a typical home remedy taken at the onset of colds to prevent further symptoms. It is said to boost the body’s immunity and is therefore considered by many as a ‘must have’ herbal remedy. The berberine found in goldenseal acts to protect the body against a variety of bacterial and fungal infections, including those that occur in the vagina, gallbladder, throat and intestines. The root of the goldenseal not only has medicinal properties of its own, but also seems to enhance the medicinal value of other herbs. In modern medicine, it has been found in drugs used to treat inflamed eyes. It is also found to be effective in treating menstrual disorders, gall bladder inflammation and in liver diseases, particularly liver cirrhosis. Goldenseal increases the flow of digestive enzymes and is thus used in cases of minor heartburn, inflamed peptic ulcers, constipation and indigestion. It has also been used to arrest menstrual problems as it regulates flow and also causes uterine contractions. |
