Introduction to Herbs

Herbal medicine or herbology is one of the most ancient forms of healing available to man. A herb is a plant or a plant part containing chemical substances that act upon the body in a particular way. It is believed that herbology was the direct result of primitive man’s observation and efforts to use the power of Nature to facilitate life and comfort.

Where Did Herbal Medicine Start? Herbs

The exact origin of herbology is unknown, but the history of herbs can be traced through the ancient traditions and cultures around the world. The herbal uses of plants like Alfalfa, Aloe Vera, Castor and Bayberry are widespread in the various cultures of the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 82% of the world’s population uses herbal medicine in one way or the other.

Effectiveness of Herbs

There are two primary concerns when following any system of health care. Is it effective and are there any side effects? While herbs act strongly on the body, most herbs have no side effects. If used properly, they will work miracles. If used unscientifically, they will have no effect or may cause minor discomforts.

Many of the traditional systems of healing depend upon the healing power of herbs. For instance, Angelica root has been used to support the digestive system, while Barberry helps remove toxins and facilitates the free flow of Bile. Balck Cohosh has excellent soothing properties while Cascara Sagrada and Castor is used to help relieve constipation.

In recent years, herbs are becoming increasingly popular. Even mainstream medicine is using herbal extracts to aid the healing process. Herbs are multi-faceted and there are no simple ways to categorize herbs and their uses. Most practicing herbalists have an intuitive feel for the healing properties of the herb. This makes herbal medicine a form of art, in addition to being an exact science.
